Oh Crap ... It's Valentine's Day this weekend????

Valentine's Day!  The day upon which all men shall be judged.

This blog is for the fellas who happened to secure a date for Valentine's Day and just need a few pointers to make the evening run a little smoother.

No pressure, guys ... well ... that's a lie .... there's pressure.

So .. let me relieve some of that by giving you some tips.

#1.  Grand gestures are amazing every once in a while ... but for the most part, if you just follow the P.A.M.F.D. attitude, you'll be A-OK.  P.A.M.F.D.  stands for, Pick A Mutha' F#ckin' Daisy!! This is what I tend to yell at my husband every once in a while when I've been feeling particularly emotionally neglected.  Essentially ... this is a general attitude where you spy a daisy (or whatever) on the way home ... pick it ... get home and while lovingly and charmingly looking into your lady's eyes, hand her the daisy and tell her that you saw the daisy and thought of her. I'm telling you ... this is GOLD.  Women love to be 'thought of'.  Even the smallest gesture is appreciated.

#2. If you haven't made a reservation for dinner yet ... you're pretty much screwed. Seriously, royally screwed to the wall.  BUT ... there are a few alternatives.  The dinner rush is from 6 to 9pm.  If you can manage to go have a few early evening pre dinner cocktails somewhere until around 8:30ish ... then most places will clear out by 9:00.   Go to opentable.com and look for places that have openings after 8:30.  You definitely DON'T want that awkward moment where you are getting turned away by the restaurant hostess and looking like you have absolutely no plan for the evening.  Big lady-boner killer.  BE IN CHARGE!

#3. Some women adore the typical candy and flowers .... some women think it's unoriginal and boring.  Gauge your lady accurately.  There's nothing worse than spending ridiculous amounts of money on expensive roses and then have her look at you like you just handed her a bag of poo.  I typically don't like getting flowers ... but there's something sweet about getting roses on Valentine's Day.  And if you're going to buy chocolate ... be creative! Buy a gift bag and fill it with all her favorite treats plus a sweet handwritten note.  (FYI, I love PayDay, Snickers, Dove Bars, etc ... )  It shows that you are cute, whimsical and have been paying attention to her likes.

#4. Jewelry.  Yes ... if you're at that point in your relationship where jewelry is appropriate ... by all means ... buy jewelry! You can NEVER and I mean NEVER go wrong with giving a woman a piece of jewelry.  Perhaps she's the kind of earthy, crunchy gal that would appreciate a vintage piece? Or is she the blingy type that's likes something big, new and shiny! Or, is she the kind of quirky girl that would think it is hysterical that you got her a Ring Pop?? Know your audience and buy appropriately!

If you've hit a home run with your Valentine's Day choices and your lady is still laughing and smiling after dinner ... here are a few things going on that night:

Kirby's Dreamland - Tommy Miller & The McElwain Clan will be ripping it up at a cool dive bar off of Chamberlain Lane across from the Ford Plant.  New Directions Bar.  Yes ... this sounds like a gay bar ... but I assure you.  It's not.

Dog House Kitchen - This is one of those cool bands that magically transport your soul straight to the bayou.  They are a southern blues, rock band that utilizes loads of harmonica.  They are playing at Gerstles on Frankfort Ave. at 10pm.

Baxter's 942 Bar & Grill - If you want to do a Valentine's Day evening that is more 'beer & burgers' ... check out Baxter's in the Higlands on Bardstown Rd.  They have a great casual, full menu and later in the evening they will be hosting The Lepolian Effect.  This band is out of Chicago and does some phenomenal Michael Jackson/Prince covers as well as some original songs.

The Monkey Wrench - Here's another 'all inclusive' evening that is a fantastic option. The Monkey Wrench has gone back to its 'dive bar' roots and changed up their menu to reflect that.  They have a 'tater tot-centric' menu brought to you by L'il Cheezers. Yes. An entire portion of the menu is based on tater tots!  It's pretty damn glorious. AND if that's not enough ... Zach Longoria will be on stage at 10pm.  If you've never seen  Zach Longoria ... you're in for a real treat.  He's an incredibly talented musician (and insanely cute!) Don't believe me?
Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMH_tVJUvfI
Zach will set the mood for the 'bow chicka wow wow' portion of the evening.

Mellwood Arts Center - Looking for an 'all inclusive' event?  How about dinner, dancing AND getting a big 'awwwwww' from your date by planning a philanthropic evening?  Here's an idea for a catered event fundraiser for the Animal Protection Association!

Whitehall Valentine's Dinner - Can't get into a restaurant but still want to impress?? Take a look at this elegant option!

VaVa Vixens - Here's something so out there and different that your date will be impressed at how 'in the know' and cool you are.  This troupe of entertainers will be at Headliners on Valentine's evening.
